We left Thursday after my Dr. appt. and took off for our lake property. It was good to finally get back down there. Everything was fine and it didn't take long for the 5th wheel to cool down. Everything was unloaded and we kicked back and relaxed until dinner time. There isn't anything that tastes better then hamburgers and hot dogs cooked over an open fire.

We got up early Friday and drove to Mountainsburg, way down in Arkansas, to pick up a honey spinner, a wire sieve to clean the honey and a tool to de-cap the honeycomb so it can be spun. The people lived down a long timber lined lane and had the cutest little house nestled in the woods. Very nice people and I'm sure we will see them again. Stopped at Golden Corral on the way home to stuff up on buffet, it was so good.

Saturday we just goofed off most of the day and then went to visit some friends at their cabin on Cedar Creek. Cold beer, Butterscotch Schnapps and snacks, doesn't get any better. We laughed so hard my tummy hurt on Sunday.

Sunday we were all really lazy after breakfast and just lounged around and enjoyed being without work to do. We went for a ride on the back roads and saw a mama deer with 3 spotted fawns, so pretty and peaceful looking. Ended up by finding a great BBQ place and ate our fill.

Monday we got up early and started packing up to come home. Didn't take long and the van was loaded well before noon so we sat around and visited before heading out. We hit a huge traffic snarl about 20 miles from home that cost us an hour or so of time to get through. Finally home sweet home and we were ready. Unloaded, everything put away, first load off laundry in washer and in recliner with feet up and watched the news until bedtime.

Tuesday I sewed a bit for the first time since the accident and it went pretty good. Quit after about 45 minutes of cutting and sewing and figured since I was starting to hurt in my right shoulder I'd better call it off until Wednesday and do some then.

Today (Wednesday) we are going to be pressing pears for pear brandy and spinning our honey. Seems kind of late in the day to start but we are still tired from all the fun at the lake. I am going to go sew for a while until we are ready to get to work.

Most of you probably know that on July 14th, just a mere 18 miles from home, we were rear-ended by a great big ole pickup truck. Lots of damage to our car. Steve hit side window and had a nice goose-egg for a couple of days. Connor was in back seat behind me and wasn't hurt at all (Thank God). I was in the passenger side and got myself one nice whiplash out of the deal. Did I say whiplash? That is not correct. I have a pinched nerve in my neck and a probable torn rotator cuff on the right side. Not the news I wanted to hear.
I started Physical Therapy this morning and this is the conclusion that was reached. I will go 3 times next week and if there is no improvement to the shoulder, Joe (therapist) is going to see about having Dr. order and MRI of the shoulder. Again, not the news I wanted to hear.
With that behind me for the day, it has been busy around here and I am so grateful for Marilyn. If not for her, my canning would not have gotten done this summer. She came out and finished canning my tomatoes for me since my shoulder isn't letting me do a lot except whine when I use it wrong. Thanks Ms. Marilyn, I owe you big time!!
We went down to the cemetery where my dad and mom are resting and visited on Tuesday. Then just took the back roads home and enjoyed the ride. It was good to talk to them a little bit while there, they are good to listen to me. I miss them so much and it has been 20 years for mom and 18 years for dad.
The tiny house build is getting closer and closer. We are both getting anxious to get the house on the market and move down to the lake. It will be so nice to be near the water and go fishing whenever we want to. I have one more closet to clean out and then most everything in the house has had a good going through and cleaning out. I'm sure we will do this several times before the move. Just getting the kids and grandkids to take their things home is an issue. You'd think they don't want us to move! LOL
I haven't sewed a stitch for over 3 weeks and am hoping that I can get to my sewing room tomorrow and see if I can manage to sew a bit without too much pain. Might not work out to well but am going to try anyway. I miss sewing.
I have visited a bit with Karen and she is pretty darn impressive. There are great tutorials on her blog as well. Definitely worthy of a visit and follow imho. Check her out via link.

Connor "The Boy" grandson is here for a week and is having so much fun with the small motorcycle we got him. He is definitely a quck learner and very safe so I don't worry too much. He isn't too much of a risk taker.

Today, I have tomatoes to preserve so will be making the family recipe and hopefully get several jars of our Tomato Special. And I am sure there are green beans again which I will help Marilyn can, I don't need any more this year. So off to the kitchen to clean and chop bell peppers, onions, garlic and peel and de-seed tomatoes.
My BFF Marilyn and I do lots of canning and preserving each summer from our gardens and sometimes items purchased at the Amish produce market. I knew Wednesday when I was unable to go to market with her that there was bound to be trouble before the end of the day. OMGosh, was I ever right!! She bought 10 (that's correct 10) boxes of picklers to make sweet pickles, dill pickles and bread and butter pickles. But I am still in shock that she brought home 10 boxes. Math is not Marilyn's best subject and she had figured that we would get about 36 or 48 jars of pickles................HAH! It ended up being way more then that!! Working furiously Wednesday afternoon, evening and night, we had 5 boxes of the pickles worked up and in lime water to make bread and butter pickles the next day. This was no small task, first you have to cut the ends off each little cuke and then you have to slice each of them up, fortunately I have a mandolin so it was a bit easier then cutting all of them into slices using a knife. Then they go into buckets of lime water to soak overnight to insure that they remain crisp and crunchy. I went to bed so tired and yes, I was a little peeved at her for purchasing so many of the darn things. I mean how many pickles can someone eat. Yes, I know that we can for her family and mine too but 10 boxes of picklers? Really? REALLY??? That left 5 boxes for sweets and dills to deal with the next day after finishing up the bread and butters.

Thursday: We rinsed the cucumbers in cold water 3 times to remove the lime from them, made the syrup to cover them in the jars with, filled all the jars with slices and poured over the hot syrup. Then every 7 jars had to be water bathed to insure they were preserved and sealed. I am already tired at this point and I looked over my shoulder at the next 5 boxes and knew I was doomed to the cutting of pickles all day again. So while Marilyn preserved the bread and butters I started cutting the ends off the picklers for dills sliced and whole. (We had decided not to do any sweets because there were so many bread and butters.) I got them all ready to slice and out comes the mandolin again and wheeeee, we are slicing for dills. Once again, into the lime water overnight (it is 9:00 pm by now) and off to the shower and bed for me.

Friday: Morning came pretty darn early but I wanted to get those pickles done! Marilyn did not get here until noon and it was crazy from then on through the day. We did get the pickles all done finally! We ended up with 84 quarts and 6 pints of bread and butter pickles and 78 quarts and 7 pints of dill pickles. Oh, I was so glad we were done, I was exhausted and at that point I hated pickles. But it ain't over yet baby, not by a long shot! Here comes Steve with buckets of carrots and beets......Are you kidding me?? Tomorrow, I'll just do them tomorrow.

Saturday: 14 quarts of green beans, 7 quarts of carrots, 11 pints of beets later and we are finally done. Sometime this week if the rain stops, there will be potatoes ready to be canned.

Now so you don't think we are entirely crazy around here and since most of you know it is just Steve and I and Marilyn being single, we don't eat all this food ourselves. We can for our families as well.
In between all the pickles, beets, carrots and green beans, Steve checked the wild black raspberries and picked 2 gallons of those and got them into the freezer.

It is a busy time of year and I do complain about it being so much work, I am ever so grateful that we can do this and save money on groceries. Not only does it save money, it tastes so much better then anything you can buy at the store. So while the bees made honey and the grapes lapped up the sunshine to help them grow and ripen, and the garden continued to grow yesterday, I rested most of the day while doing 2 loads of laundry.

I wonder when I will see my sewing room again? Probably not very soon..............:(

I can't imagine starting my day any other way. Farm livin' is the life for me. Can't even fathom living in town. EVER

So this morning I woke up and as usual I checked my email first thing. And not only did our chickens wake me up this morning but so did my friend Rhonda's!
After a warm kiss a hug and some joking around we wished one another a happy anniversary and hoped we would have 30 more years together. Other then going out to dinner it was just like any other day.
Recently I saw both my doctors and got a clean bill of health (for me that means I'm doing pretty darn good) and to carry on with the exception of a couple of medication changes. And orders to start using my "Trilogy" which is a fancy, smancy CPAP like machine but not a CPAP. I know that is confusing. It works on the same basis and theory but a CPAP won't work for me as I do not have sleep apnea, I have a tendency to breath to shallow while sleeping and my oxygen levels drop dangerously low. I'm sure by now you have figured out I hadn't been using it at night. The company came and fit me with a new delivery system, instead of a mask, I now have a nose plug type thing which I call my pig snout. But......it seems to be doing the trick, I am getting more rest and can tell because I feel like doing things again instead of sleeping all day. So what does that mean? Well here goes.....
In the past week I have :
Completed 2 doll quilts
Made 3 sets of quilt blocks for queen size quilts
Taught Marilyn how to make a Kaleidoscope quilt block and she made enough blocks for a queen size top in 5 hours, amazing!
Worked on trimming up my "Ugly Spring" Quilt Blocks.
Folded some fabric that I had dragged out and never put back and got it stacked with some new fabric that needs to be put away as well.
Made some cupcake potholders today
Started cleaning around my flower beds yesterday.
Took the time to really look at and enjoy my daffodils and miniature irises that are blooming. Walked in the orchard to smell the sweet blooming plum and cherry trees. Noted that my flowering crab-apple tree is nearly ready to bloom
And in general have had a lot of fun doing it all.
In between it was snuggle time with Maverick, go to farm and check out Marilyn's new calves and her new bull, Mr. Classic
Oh yes, I forgot, we went to visit Steve's mom twice this past week.
I feel good

What have you been doing?
And brother am I glad it is gone. It pretty well whipped me down.
I have so much to do to get caught up and then so much to do to get back on track. And I am ready, more then you will ever know.
I won some beautiful fabric in a giveaway and as soon as it arrives, I will share with you and give you a hint of what I am going to make with it.
Judy's memory quilt is still in the frame and I have high hopes it will be done and out by this weekend or at the very least by Monday morning.
I broke my vow to not get involved in swaps and hops this year but this is such a quick and sweet thing, I couldn't resist. Missouri Mel is having a "Little Civil War Quilt" swap and you know me, couldn't let that go. Wonder what I'll get and also wonder what I am going to make.....Better get to planning, would like to have it done by April 1st.
We are having crazy weather here, warm as spring one day and snowing the next! Where is Spring Mother Nature, we all are so ready.
Today is a day at that quilting machine and some fabric picking from the stash.

What have you done this week?

I found these little blocks in a bag of rags and just had to put them together. First I washed them in a lingerie bag, gave them a good pressing, and sewed them together. You can see where the pinwheels don't match up but I didn't want to change a thing about them. I imagine a little girl made these and they were put aside and forgotten and someone just pitched them in the rags. Well those rags are my riches and now I have a sweet little quilt with a made up story. The backing is from my vintage floral stash. I just love it. The only thing is I wish I had hand-quilted it but it was so crooked, I was a bit intimidated.

Makes me feel good to be able to see clearly through them. Tomorrow curtains come down and go into the laundry and that hideous chore will be done. I have lots of windows people.
Another thing happening tomorrow is that Connor is coming up to spend part of his spring break with us. I can't wait to see him, his dad says he has grown so much. Probably 5'7" now which makes him as tall as me (or short if you like). He has a ways to go to catch up with dad, uncle Kevin and cousins on my side of family. Everyone but me was tall, at least 6/. But not me, oh no! And the sisters were pretty and had boobs. I was homely, buck toothed, wore glasses, had uncontrollable hair and NO Boobs.. I think they were grossly overrated anyway. :)
It all works out in the end. Remember the story of the Ugly Duckling? Well almost happened to me.

What are you doing this week?

I hadn't been able to reach her in a while and I should have checked on her at work, but....well you know....we all say tomorrow and sometimes that tomorrow never comes and then it is too.....late. We had so much fun together. We went on vacation to New Orleans, introduced my beer drinking friend to hard liquor in the form of the infamous "Hurricane", 1/2 way through it she couldn't feel her lips so I finished it for her along with the four others I had. We sang on the street with the street musicians and had a great time. The next day we went to the beach at Biloxi and she got so sunburned, we both got stung by jelly fish but still had a great time. I will miss you dear lady. RIP.....

Then just 2 days ago, our elderly neighbor and friend sat down in his recliner and went to sleep forever. We were shocked with that news as well. Steve went down to check on him and his son had just found him. I will miss the old guy, full of bluff and bluster but had wisdom to counter the b&b...We will miss you Benny, it was great knowing you.

I will see you both in Heaven. Save my place.

Today my Bff Marilyn liked to have worked me to death. I finished sewing the back for the memory quilt for another Bff Judy. I made a full bed pillow sham for her as well. The quilt goes into my quilting machine Monday first thing. I put together the back for Marilyn's quilt and for the first time I added quilt blocks to the back of a quilt. I love it and so does she. Ooops, I just remembered I forgot to put labels on both of the quilts, Oh well, tomorrow. After that, I helped Marilyn get some towels ready for some applique and embroidery. She will be tracing the designs on them tomorrow while I work on cleaning the basement. It is such a hideous mess, I am embarrassed. I hope I have time and the inclination to take apart my sewing chair, add some more padding to the seat and recover it, or at least get started. We then picked out fabric for her to make a quilt for her new grand-dog Pearl. She is so proud of her. Quilt will be cute, she is working on it tomorrow too. We will cut out the 3rd block of our BOM that we are doing. LOL, noticed yesterday that I sewed the handle on my basket block from last month, upside down. Ripped and ready to sew tomorrow. Gosh tomorrow sounds so busy. I hope I get most of it done. The chair will probably go on hold for a bit. I'll just use a pillow under my plump behind. I hope I get some pictures taken tomorrow to show what I have been doing.

I am so ready for Spring and I know you all are too. I won't bend your ear any longer.

What did you do this week?
I just bought a box of color catchers and thought, why can't I make these myself? So I found the recipe and let me tell you, my homemade works as good or better then the store bought.

First off you need some Soda Ash. This can be made by pouring plain ole everyday Baking Soda on a cookie sheet and baking for one hour in a 200 degree oven. You will end up with a pile of ash, which is now referred to as Soda Ash or Washing Powder. Pour into an air tight container for storage.

Put 1 (one) tablespoon of the washing soda in 1 (one) cup of boiling water and let dissolve. While that is going on
gather up a one yard or so of white junk fabric, backs off of old
t-shirts, flannel or old toweling. Cut into the size pieces you think
you would like. Soak the pieces in the dissolved washing soda until
saturated, (do not squeeze out), hang to dry.

When you are ready to wash those reds and whites, or dark and light
clothes, or anything such as that, grab a piece, throw it in your wash
and watch the magic. When done throw away the piece of cloth, it has
done its job and is no longer good for anything that I can think of.

There you have it! Now wash away.

We have about 1/2" of ice covering everything. It is awesome as long as I don't have to get out in it. Steve went to town yesterday afternoon and it took him 1 1/2 hours to get through the 10 miles to home. But he made it safely and said it was more dangerous bringing the groceries in then driving! Okay dear, whatever you say. Thank you for going to the store and other stuff.

Just a quick note to remind you that the February Fab Shop Hop started today. Tammy S. from Kansas won a nice prize in December. Who knows, one of us might be lucky this month. Shamefully, I did not get very far with last months hop. :( I let to much stuff get in the way, like taxes.

Sunday, Feb. 2nd is important in two ways: It is also Ground Hog day. I have no predictions on what Punxsutawney Phil will see, but we can watch it on TV or our PC if we want. Phil makes his prediction around 7:25 a.m EST

Superbowl XLVIII is going to be a wonderful time spent eating all this
good junk food I am making and of course the Superbowl Commercials. And the game. I know who I want to win but did not get into any pools this year. I am just going to sit here, watch and relax. We are having summer sausage and cheeses, shrimp, cheese ball, vegetable tray, grape salad, and banana split cake. Steve made Oreo balls, which he can have all of them (not my favorite) and chocolate covered peanuts. I guess we will probably gain a pound or two.

BFF Marilyn and I worked on our BOM that we are making together. This is her first quilt ever and I am making her do it all, from picking out the fabric, ironing, cutting, sewing, reading instructions, and pressing again. I think she did a great job. Only had to unsew one time. Here is her block and mine is below hers.
This is a Mystery BOM from FQS with their fabrics. Isn't it so springy and 30's looking? I love it.
